Important Things to Consider When You’re Building a New Fence

A new fence can dramatically change the look and feel of your property. Not only that, but you might be pleasantly surprised when you have a home appraisal and it appraises for more than you thought. All because you installed a new fence!

To maximize the impact of your new fence, ask yourself these questions:

What will your budget be?

If you don’t know what your budget will be, Harwell Fencing and Gates can come to your home for a free estimate. You can tell us what you want and we’ll make it happen!

What type of lumber will be used?

A basic wood fence is an affordable option that’s made from two types of redwood boards. However, if your budget allows, we can use Ipe, Mangaris / Red Balau, Golden Balau, Mahogany, and reclaimed wood.

Of course, we also specialize in plexiglass, composite, steel, and iron fences too.

What color will the stain be?

If you’re going with a wood fence, you can choose unstained if you’d like an au natural look. But we have a wide variety of stains you can choose from. If you don’t like any of those options, we can customize a stain for you!

Is the fence going to be in the front yard or the back?

The reason why this is an important consideration is because you’ll want the fence in the front to be a showstopper. The fence in the backyard, however, can be a simple, no-fuss wood fence. That said, you might see a difference in how much value is added if you opt for a high-end fence all around your home.

How tall does the fence need to be?

If you’re interested in building a privacy fence, it should be six feet high, but it can be as tall as seven or eight feet. However, we can add wall toppers to an existing fence if you want to convert your regular fence into a privacy fence.

Will you need gates?

Are you going to need gates for your fence or will it be a complete enclosure? If you need gates, we strongly recommend getting steel frame gates because they’re sturdier than wood and the locking mechanism (you’re probably going to want to lock the gate) will be much more secure.

Do you need a driveway gate?

If you’re going to install a gate at the driveway, will you need to open it manually, or are you going to have it motorized? If it’ll be motorized, then what kind of motor will you want? Of course, not only do you want to consider the motor, but if you’re interested in something a little more unique, our craftsman style, arched top driveway gates are sure to please.

There are a lot of things that you’ll need to take into consideration when you’re building a new fence. Fences don’t have to be the boring stuff you can get at the local home improvement store. When you want to make a statement and stand out from the rest of the homes on the block, we can help.

Harwell Fence and Gates has been giving homes in the Los Angeles area the start treatment for more than 35 years. When you want the best there is, contact us for a free estimate or schedule a visit to our showroom. You won’t be disappointed.

Arian Harwell, Lead Designer

I grew up building custom furniture in Taos, New Mexico with my Dad. We did it all. When we moved west we liked the weather and decided to build outdoors. Over the years we met a bunch of skilled craftsmen who like making fences and gates with us.
